Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and execute overall fundraising strategy for EDF India.
- Manage a portfolio of major and principal-level donors and prospective donors in India.
- Solicit philanthropic support from private individuals and foundations.
- Identify, recruit and steward high-net-worth individuals onto the EDF India Advisory Board
- Represent EDF India in meetings with high-net-worth individuals, business executives, and other key stakeholders.
- Grow and manage a high-performing team to execute the new organisation's fundraising strategy.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for EDF Portfolio Managers who manage US and EU based donors interested in supporting EDF India. `
- Any other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate an intellectual curiosity for EDF's mission, programmes, and unique selling points. The Director should have experience in successfully fulfilling a similar role in non-profit, higher education or healthcare development, or in the family office arenas. Additionally, the Director should have the ability to work collaboratively and strategically with regional leadership and the wider development team across the organisation.
The ideal candidate should possess the following professional attributes:
- Advanced degree and 8 years of demonstrated success in front line fundraising.
- Thorough understanding of the donor market in India, including the behaviours and motivations of Indian donors, a wide network of professional contacts and an ability to develop new networks.
- Strategic ability and big-picture problem-solving capacity. Experience with complex theories of change, and strategies that involve economic and market-based solutions to environmental challenges will be a distinct advantage.
- Experience building, managing, and leading teams.
- Well-honed skills in developing donor cultivation and solicitation strategies.
- Initiative and independence combined with the ability to work well as part of a team. Ability to act autonomously and to work productively and collaboratively with partners and colleagues located in multiple offices and time zones.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, and the experience and inclination to be an effective, outgoing spokesperson for Environmental Defense Fund.
- Ability to represent EDF India as an independent and genuinely Indian organisation, while also remaining aligned with the strategic priorities of EDF as a global organisation.
- A high level of comfort with direct donor interaction, including discussions of personal and family finances.
- Knowledge of and ability to use fundraising databases such as Salesforce.
- Demonstrate creativity, energy, confidence, and integrity as well as a high level of discretion and respect for donor privacy.
- Self-motivated, extremely well-organised, collegial, and capable of functioning with grace under pressure.
- A commitment to Environmental Defense Fund's mission and values.
- Fluency in English and Hindi; fluency in one other language in widespread use in India a plus.
The Director of Development will be based in Delhi or Mumbai, with frequent travel in India and occasional international travel, including to the United States.
