Research Associate

  • International
  • 0-0L/Annual

Short Description

The Energy Studies Institute (ESI) is a research institute at the National University of Singapore seeking to advance the understanding of energy policy issues by conducting independent research and analysis.  We are looking for researchers to join a multi-disciplinary team carrying out research projects on a range of energy issues that are of concern to Singapore and the region.

The Energy Economics Division is looking at recruiting Research Associate. Staff recruited to these positions will operate under the responsibility of the Division Head and work closely with all members of the Energy Economics Division.

This will initially be a one-year position, with the possibility for renewal subject to satisfactory performance and budget.

Job Description

  • Develop background research for project proposals, primarily for submission to local government agencies, under the guidance of and in collaboration with existing Research Fellows and Senior Research Fellows.

    • This may require attending various planning meetings with representatives from government agencies, local industry, or other organizations.

  • Contribute to development of project presentations and reports, and provide underlying research to support academic activities. Where suitable, this will result in co-authorship on articles submitted to academic journals.

  • Support selected administrative tasks, including the organising of seminars and workshops, and other tasks as assigned by the Division Head, such duties being commensurate with rank and experience.

  •  A modest proportion of time will be set aside for self-guided research to support personal development.

The specific area of work will depend on the priorities of the institute at any given point in time. In the near term, some focus areas for the energy economics division will include:

  • Green/sustainable economic growth and reviewing economic growth models that capture/reflect circular economy dynamics.

  • Smart energy systems for urban economies, including smart cities, smart grids and industrial organization for related industries such as the data centre industry.

  • Financial economics of energy, climate and sustainability e.g. green bond market dynamics, investment market activity (investors evolving investment preferences), development finance for energy related projects, carbon pricing etc.

  • Techno-economic pathway analysis for emerging technologies (e.g. Hydrogen).

  • District cooling.

  • Energy efficiency benchmarking.

The above list is far from exhaustive, yet indicates that in joining our team you will have the opportunity to engage with and to some extent choose between a variety of workstreams that will align with your interests.

Requirements

  • Possess at least an Undergraduate Degree in the field of economics and preferably a Masters Degree.
    • It is preferred that candidates are trained within a formal economics program from a recognized university, with economics as the sole, or major discipline. Specialisms such as applied economics, business economics, agricultural economics, financial economics or others, fall inside this category.
    • Individuals with only a minor in economics, or a degree from related disciplines remain welcome to apply, though preference will be given to those from an economics background.
  • An interest and desire to deepen your understanding of the economics of energy systems, climate change and related market and policy issues.
  • Relevant working and practical experience in industry or government agencies in the area of energy and environment would be highly valuable.
    • Ideally this is within Singapore, or the South East Asia region, given the importance of these regions to work undertaken within ESI.
    • Applicants with no regional work experience will still be given full consideration.
  • Relevant research experience on the ASEAN region would be an advantage.
  • A strong written and oral command of the English language is essential. Secondary languages are desirable.
  • The appointed individual must be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Please note that only shortlisted candidates will be contacted, if you have not heard from us within 3 months, you should assume that your application has not been successful.
