Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership and assistance in TB health systems strengthening especially for DR-TB detection,
  • Identify best practices and models for DR-TB detection in USAID priority countries,
  • Develop or refine models for improving drug resistance testing including, but not limited to, specimen referral and transport, laboratory training or capacity building. availability of appropriate tests, quality of testing, and rapid turnaround of results
  • Provide expert guidance for rapid scale-up of DR-TB diagnostics in IDDS focal countries in line with WHO guidelines and international best practice
  • Lead IDDS consortium DR-TB sub- Technical Working group to establish multi-country guidelines and best practices in line with WHO approved guidance
  • Lead IDDS DR-TB team in Asia.
  • Train and mentor IDDS TB specialists and host country counterparts on the application of DR-TB diagnostics new policies, guidelines, and SOPs
  • Work closely with the national TB programs, and other implementing partners to strengthen DR-TB screening and diagnosis,
  • Ensure IDDS’ activities are aligned with USAID and countries’ priorities and are well-coordinated with other partners and stakeholders, e.g., World Health Organization and Global Fund,
  • Identify and collaborate with technical experts on SOPs, technical guidance, and other laboratory (including supranational reference laboratories) requirements for scale-up of DR-TB diagnostics
  • Implement models in countries identified by USAID, in partnership with USAID, Stop TB partnership, Global Fund and other development partners as applicable
  • Use and share evidence-based methods and best practices,
  • Collaborate and coordinate with other subject matter experts and partners on DR-TB detection.

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • MD or Master’s in laboratory or life sciences, microbiology, public health or a related field
  • 12+ years of progressive experience, with a minimum of 10 years of experience in TB diagnostic strengthening programs in low- and middle-income countries or high burden TB countries.
  • Demonstrated ability to disseminate technical thought leadership through journal articles, white papers, and conference presentations
  • Hands-on experience with TB diagnostics tools including microscopy, WHO TB recommended rapid molecular diagnostics (GeneXpert, TrueNat), culture and line-probe assays
  • Deep knowledge of TB diagnostic algorithms
  • Understanding of clinical progression and treatment of TB; familiarity with treatment algorithms
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to use data for decision making
  • Fluency in written and spoken English with strong presentation skills
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills in facilitation and stakeholder engagement/coordination
  • Willingness and ability to travel a minimum of 25% internationally and other travel as needed (temporally remote work, occasional travel required in the post-COVID era)

Preferred Skills/Experience:

  • Previous TB detection experience in Asia or Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Familiarity with USG management, programs, and operations including regulatory and reporting requirements
