BACKGROUND

Emergencies and disasters can occur anywhere in the world, affecting human health, people’s lives and the infrastructure built to support them. Environmental health problems arising from emergencies and disasters are connected to their effects on the physical, biological and social environment that pose a threat to human health, well-being and survival: shelter, water, sanitation, disease vectors, pollution, etc. The initiative should be undertaken to protect public health from the detrimental effects of climate change. This includes risk assessments and the development of health adaptation strategies, as well as institutional capacity building for extreme weather events preparedness and response. It is important to have a clear and practical guidance on how to monitor the implementation of relevant health adaptation projects, as well as clear
indicators, in order to understand the impact, and measure the scale and nature of health vulnerability to climate change, the vulnerability of the health sector and the main impacts on health as trends. Evaluation methods that allow understanding the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of interventions are also key to gain knowledge on the best health adaptation options. The preparedness and response actions to the environmental health aspects of disasters are crucial in influencing human suffering, loss of life and ill-health associated with any disaster. For example, over two years after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused massive devastation, people were living in temporary shelters and reconstruction projects were struggling to ensure that new housing had clean water supplies and good sanitation. Potential of population and environmental exposure is severe in densely populated areas. Therefore, it is imperative to assess environmental health issues in disasters and emergencies and ensure that the same is incorporated as part of the disaster management planning process. Building the resilience of health systems to Environmental Health in disaster & emergencies is part of a preventive approach to public health. Keeping this in view, Department of Community Medicine, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital and National Institute of Disaster Management are jointly organizing a Training Workshop on "Environmental Health in Disasters & Emergencies" from 02-04 March, 2021 at the Dept. of Community Medicine, Vardhman Mahavir Medical College & Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi - 110029.
